The St. Margaret Memorial Hospital Foundation's Dispensary Board founded the Cinderella Ball in 1924 as a social debutante ball to benefit the Episcopalian-run St. Margaret Memorial Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The event has occurred nearly every year since and continues into 2017. In the 1990s, Cinderella Ball debutantes participated in a Leadership Volunteer Forum, created to encourage the women to volunteer with the community projects of St. Margaret Hospital. In 2002, the Cinderella Women's Committee was formed and replaced the sponsorship of St. Margaret's Dispensary Board. Subsequent beneficiaries of the Cinderella Ball include the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, National Aviary, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Boys & Girls Club of Western Pennsylvania, and Senator John Heinz History Center.
Scope and Content Notes
The Cinderella Ball Committee Records primarily document the Pittsburgh debutante ball and its ancillary activities between 1949 and 2017. Records include photographic prints, correspondence, event policies, planning notes, tickets, programs, schedules, financial records, and news clippings. These materials chronicle the service projects completed by debutantes, Dispensary Board and Cinderella Committee planning meetings, the mother-daughter tea event preceding the ball, as well as the rehearsal and main event.
A majority of the materials are photographic prints, which are largely arranged chronologically. Most document the Cinderella Ball itself or the rehearsal of the event. Many photographs of the Cinderella Ball main event within this collection include a range of individuals or specific traditional moments, such as the selection of Cinderella. However, materials in Box 2, Folder 45 document the presentation of a specific debutante, Diana Loevner, at the 2009 ball and includes hand-written notes describing the process of events being shown.
Lists of Pittsburgh Debutantes (Box 1, Folder 11) include names of women who participated in debutante balls throughout Pittsburgh prior to the establishment of the St. Margaret's Cinderella Ball. Box chairman records include documentation on planning of the evening's entertainment and decorating for the event.
