History

Carl Krasik is a Pittsburgh-based lawyer who has worked for Reed Smith LLP and BNY Mellon. Krasik began collecting political memorabilia in 1968, inspired by the political activity of that year. He later narrowed his collecting focus to Pennsylvania politics, especially governors and senators, after working with Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Herbert Cohen.

Scope and Content Notes

The Krasik Collection of Political Memorabilia illustrates the emerging political identity and character of Western Pennsylvania, documenting key political, social, and economic issues over a 200-year span of the state's history. The collection contains posters, broadsides, newspapers, booklets, pamphlets, sheet music, 45 r.p.m. records, postcards, campaign palm cards, ballots, correspondence, signatures, sheet music, photographs, blotters, petitions, fliers, tickets, and related ephemera created between 1790 and 2015.

The materials relate to Pennsylvania gubernatorial, senatorial, congressional, legislative, judicial, mayoral and presidential elections, as well as campaigns for various local offices. Political parties represented throughout include Republican, Democrat, Whig, Socialist, and Federalist, among others. A majority of the materials are written in English. However, a pamphlet written in Italian is located in Box 1 Folder 33, a cartoon written in German is housed in Box 1 Folder 12, and an announcement of political candidates written in German is located in Box 3 Folder 3.

Most of the materials are arranged in three series according to size. Series I. Boxes 1-2 contain items measuring no more than 8 ½ x 14 inches. Series II. Boxes 3-4 contain items measuring no more than 16 x 20 inches. Series III. Boxes 5-6 contain items measuring no more than 23 ½ x 31 ½ inches. Within these series, folders and items are arranged chronologically by year. The contents list for the collection contains a description for each item, including material type, title, and date for each item.

Series IV. Non-political material consists of a single folder with materials unrelated to political campaigns. These records include a publication, "Roots and Branches: Pittsburgh's Jewish History," sponsored by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Jewish Committee. Also included are four items documenting the Pittsburgh International Airport opening in 1992.

Arrangement

Materials are arranged first by size, then by date. Non-political material arranged in Series IV.
