Dr. Henry D. Wilkins was born on July 18, 1898 in California, Pennsylvania and passed away December 23, 1975 at the age of 77. Dr. Wilkins practiced dentistry for more than 50 years working in the cities of California, Brownsville and Clarksville, Pennsylvania. Dr. Henry D. Wilkins was the son of Fred and Eva Wilkins and possibly the grandson of Captain Henry D. Wilkins, a riverboat captain working in Brownsville, Pennsylvania.

Wilkins provides information about individual packet boats that were produced in Brownsville from 1813 to 1916. Information on each boat includes details such as when they were built and first launched, who built them, construction materials and procedures, and the cargo the boats carried. Wilkins gathered this information over several years from sources such as the National Archives, Fred Way's Directory of Western Rivers Packet, Kussart's Navigation of the Monongahela, Records of the Monongahela Navigation Co., Captain Joseph L. Hendrickson's diary, Pittsburgh newspapers, and area residents.
