The Allegheny County Medical Society was established in 1865 with A.H. Gross being the first president of the organization. The Allegheny County Medical Society had approximately 450 members serve in World War I. The members of the society commissioned the construction of a memorial for those who had served, which was unveiled on November 30, 1922. The site of the memorial is located in Schenley Park in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pa., at the southeast corner near Phipps Conservatory. Pittsburgh Sculptor Signor Giuseppe Moretti designed and completed the memorial. The Allegheny County Medical Society is still in existence and in 1960 established the ACMS Foundation with the mission to give back to the community.
The Allegheny County Medical Society Military Service Records consists of one bound volume of biographical information about members of the Allegheny County Medical Society (ACMS) who served in World War I. In addition, there is a brief history of the ACMS memorial committee. The majority of the book contains the name and biographical information of each member who served in the war. The biographical information includes: residence, date of birth, medical degree graduation date and location, marital status, children's names, date of entrance into service, rank, place of service, length, and date when discharged. The members of the society are listed alphabetically in the book.
