History of the Fox Chapel Volunteer Fire Department
The Fox Chapel Volunteer Fire Department is located in Fox Chapel Borough, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Fox Chapel was originally part of O'Hara and Indiana Townships. In 1928, property owners assembled at Shady Side Academy and voted to incorporate the Fox Chapel District Association. The matters of immediate concern to the Association were fire and police protection, and the directors took action to meet these needs. By 1933 the District Association recognized the conflict of interest between themselves and the two townships, and a petition was filed to allow the formation of a new borough. Fox Chapel Borough was incorporated on August 9, 1934. The fire department received its charter on July 27, 1939, under the name the Fox Chapel Authority Fire Department and was incorporated on September 29, 1939. The following are the names of the directors and incorporators listed on the charter and incorporation documents: Walter N. Lissfelt, W. N. Steitz, C.H. Eichenlaub, Jr., Elmer J. Lebo, Howard C. Meyer, Walter R. Seibert, and M.J. Strohm.
Today, the Fox Chapel Volunteer Fire Department consists of approximately fifty residents and non-residents. It is maintained and financed by the Borough. During normal working hours, the members of the Public Works Department respond to all fire calls. There are two fire stations, one at the Borough Building, the other on Dorseyville Road. The Department is equipped with three fire trucks, a rescue truck, a van and modern equipment. The fire alarm alerting system consists of sirens at each of the fire stations and alerting equipment in the home or on the person of each fireman. The fire department's objective is to provide "protection of life, limb and property from fire and/or any other catastrophe."
