The Congregation Sons of Israel, Rankin, Pa., was chartered on April 29, 1908. The Orthodox congregation started by Jews from Hungary and Germany, consisted, of one hundred families at its peak. The congregation served the communities of Rankin, Braddock and Swissvale.
In 1910, the congregation moved into the only building it used during its existence. Located on 2nd Avenue, at the corner of Grace Street, this building was used until July 7, 1959, when it was sold to the Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County.
Records do not indicate when weekly services were discontinued, although by the late 1950's most of the members had moved from the Rankin area. High Holiday services were held for the last time in 1956.
The board of directors continued to meet after 1959 in order to conduct cemetery business. The cemetery was shared with the Agudath Achim Synagogue in Braddock. Known as the 11th Street Cemetery in the early 1900's, the cemetery is located on Sherwood Road in the Forest Hills section of Pittsburgh.
Of particular interest are the minutes of the congregation (1930-1984.) Also included are a membership ledger (1960-1984) and a checking account ledger (1946-1984.) Other materials from 1985 pertain to the administration of the cemetery.
The Congregation Sons of Israel Records are housed in one archival box and arranged chronologically.
