Biographical Sketch of the Stotler Family

This collection is centered on Emmanuel Stotler Sr. (1777-1868) and his son Emmanuel Jr. (1819-1902). Emmanuel Sr. was the son of Jacob Stotler, a Revolutionary War veteran who purchased land in 1773 in present day Penn Township. In 1790, Jacob Stotler died, before he was able to move his family to western Pennsylvania. In 1791, his widow, Nancy, moved the family to the land he had purchased. Jacob's son, Emmanuel, inherited this land upon the death of his mother.

In 1799 Emmanuel Stotler wed Elizabeth Bowman, and the couple had a total of thirteen children. During his lifetime Mr. Stotler was able to add to his father's original purchase and became a prominent citizen of Penn Township. He died in 1868 at the age of ninety-one. His son, Emmanuel Jr. (1819-1902), inherited the estate upon his death. A member of the Republican Party, Emmanuel Jr. was, at various times, school director, tax assessor and tax collector for Penn Township. David Stotler, Emmanuel, Jr.'s brother, was married to Ellen Mellon, the sister of Judge Thomas Mellon.

Scope and Content Notes

The Stotler Family Papers are housed in one archival box with the addition of one shelf volume and are arranged alphabetically by folder title. These papers include receipts, tax assessments for Penn Township, estate papers, letters, maps, genealogical information on the Stotler family, notes from the Plum and Wilkins Literary Association, and photocopies of original papers. The majority of the materials are of a financial nature. Included are many receipts and materials related to the Stotler's land holdings. Of interest is a letter, which can be found in the Election Materials folder written by Thomas Mellon to Emmanuel, Jr. on the eve of the 1859 primary elections in Allegheny County. In this letter Mr. Mellon, who was running for judge, asks for Emmanuel Jr.'s support in the upcoming election and details a campaign strategy that he wishes Emmanuel Jr. to follow. Also of note is a ledger detailing the Road Tax for Penn Township for the year 1831, which can be found in the personal papers of Emmanuelle Sr.

Volume 1 is a bound ledger that is a record of the Stotler family farm from 1863-1866 and 1871. Within the ledger are loose leafs papers from the 1870-1880s that include advertisements and purchases.
