Scope and Content Notes
A collection of papers presented at a conference held in 2000 in honor of the late Yang Ch'ing-kʻun (C. K. Yang) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, presented by the University of Pittsburgh, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Zhongshan University and the Lingnan Foundation. Dr. C. K. Yang was a longtime sociology professor at the University of Pittsburgh. The conference was held in Shatin, Hong Kong. Included are 25 papers which were presented at the conference.

History
The Asian Studies Program at the University of Pittsburgh co-hosted the international sociology conference, Chinese Society in Change: A Conference on the Legacy of Yang Ch'ing-kʻun, from November 30 to December 2, 2000 at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The organizers of the conference were Zhongshan University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Pittsburgh with sponsorship by Lingnan Foundation. The conference examined the future of social science in China and promoted an understanding of China in the world.
The University of Pittsburgh's delegation was led by Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg and included Patricia Stranahan, director of the Asian Studies Program and professor of history; Michele Ferrier, the assistant director of the Asian Studies Program; Cho-yun Hsu, professor emeritus of history and sociology; Burkart Holzner, professor of sociology and former director of the Center for International Studies; Thomas Rawski, professor of economics and history; Wenfang Tang, associate professor of political science; and Neil Diamant, Asian Studies Program post-doctoral fellow.
Dr. C. K. Yang was a professor in sociology at the University of Pittsburgh from 1953 to 1981. He was born in Canton, China in 1910 and received his Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Arts degrees in sociology from Yenching University in 1932 and 1934. He came to the United States to study at the University of Michigan where he received his Ph.D. in 1939. During his tenure at Pitt, Dr. Yang was one of the leading experts in the study of Chinese society and culture. His studies and wrote on various aspects of contemporary China including, the family, the village, and religion. Dr. Yang was instrumental in the formation of sociology departments at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Zhongshan University. Dr. Yang died in January 10, 1999.
