The Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) was founded in Chicago in 1974. It lays claim to being the only national organization for union women in the United States. The goals of CLUW are to organize the unorganized; promote affirmative action; increase women's participation in their unions; and increase women's participation in political and legislative activities. In support of these goals, CLUW has organized national rallies in support of such issues as pay equity and reproductive rights. On the political side, the organization publishes election booklets, registers union women to vote, and sends letters to government officials detailing its stance on issues of concern. CLUW's first biennial national convention was held in 1980 and is now held every odd numbered year. A Working Women's Awareness Week, in which prominent labor union women were recognized, was held in 1986 and is celebrated annually. As of 2007, the organization claims over seventy-five local chapters representing women from sixty international and national unions throughout the United States.
The Pittsburgh chapter of CLUW has participated in many of the organization's national campaigns and rallies. During national CLUW events like Working Women's Awareness Week, the Pittsburgh chapter hosts an annual brunch to honor local labor union women for their contributions within the labor movement. The chapter also organizes actions regarding local union and feminist issues.
This collection contains records of both the Pittsburgh chapter of the Coalition of Labor Union Women and the national organization. Chapter records include correspondence, newsletters, and agendas, all of which describe CLUW and other union activities in the Pittsburgh region. Certificates include Pittsburgh city council proclamations announcing Working Women's Awareness Week and awards of chapter members. National records include CLUW constitutions, newsletters, and information regarding conferences and conventions. Literature on reproductive rights, equality, HIV/AIDS, and labor law elucidate CLUW's stance on these issues. CLUW voting records and election guides give information on national politicians and indicate the organization's endorsed candidates.
The files in this collection have been divided into chapter and national records and arranged chronologically.
