History
Farband-Labor Zionist Order was founded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in September 1908. Many of the Order's early supporters were from Pittsburgh's Branch 4 of the organization. In 1911, a National Convention of Farband took place in Pittsburgh. The Farband-Labor Zionist Order was granted an official charter by the State of New York in 1913, cementing its presence as a national Jewish organization. The records in this collection were retrieved from the Labor Zionist Building, located at 6328 Forbes Avenue, in the Squirrel Hill area of Pittsburgh. The building was formerly known as the Jewish Culture Center and has housed a variety of Jewish community organizations throughout its history.
Scope and Content Notes
The bulk of the materials in this collection come from the Farband Labor Zionist Order, dating from 1950 to 1970. Of note are programs from the Order's annual Yiddish concert series. There is also information on Habonim, a Jewish youth movement. Meeting minutes and membership lists are also present.
