History

The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union was created in 1979 through the merger of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America and the Retail Clerks International Union, both of the AFL-CIO. Local 23 formed in 1983 through the merger of UFCW Locals 424 and 590, both former Amalgamated Meat Cutters locals, and 1407 of the Retail Clerks. Local 23 represents workers in western Pennsylvania, western New York, eastern Ohio and northern West Virginia. Although the union lost many members to due to union store closures within the first few years of its existence, Local 23 is now one of the largest union locals in Pennsylvania.
