Scope and Content Notes

This collection consists of six scrapbooks of information compiled on the Free Speech Movement. In the fall of 1964, the University of California at Berkeley exploded into social unrest when an administrative order placed a ban on political activity on campus, namely fund-raising, recruitment, and advocacy of "controversial" ideas. The United Front, a conglomeration of student organizations, most nationally based, planned to break University regulations and set up recruitment tables. Immediately following was the suspension of eight so-called "leaders" and the arrest of a Campus CORE (Congress Of Racial Equality) member. This led to a 32-hour stand-off between demonstrators and police, as students obstructed the path of the police car holding the member. On October 4, 1964, the United Front became the Free Speech Movement, which went on to fiercely battle the Administration.

On January 3, 1965, after many sit-ins, strikes, and broken promises, the newly appointed chancellor acceded almost totally to the FSM's demands. There after, students were allowed to set up tables in designated areas and use these tables to receive donations, distribute literature, recruit membership and sell items such as buttons, pins, and bumper stickers. Conflictive information places the FSM anywhere from 1963-1968. The information given here documents fall 1964 through winter 1965.
