History
Local 601 is an electrical workers union representing workers at the Westinghouse plants in East Pittsburgh, Trafford and other locations in western Pennsylvania. The local began in 1937 as a member of the United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers of America (UE). When the UE was expelled from the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) for alleged communist affiliations, a heated internal struggle in Local 601 resulted in the local affiliating with the CIO's newly created electrical workers union. The new union, the International Union of Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers (IUE), was headed by former UE President James Carey. The IUE has altered its name several times and was also known as the International Union of Electronic, Electrical, Technical, Salaried and Machine Workers, AFL-CIO from 1984 to 1986. Since 1987, the union has been called the International Union of Electronic, Electrical, Salaried, Machine and Furniture Workers and is now part of the Communication Workers of America.
