History
The ESWP was founded in 1880 in Pittsburgh by prominent area engineers and businessmen for the advancement of the professions of engineering through technical activities, public service participation and social organizations. The organization remains a focal point for the area's engineering and technical community.
The Society has sponsored The Annual Water Conference since 1940. Session topics from the 1940s included "War Time Possibilities of Water Supply Contamination"; "Water Treatment Equipment for War Industries"; and "Water Treatment Equipment for Steel Mills". Topics addressed in the 1950s included heating and cooling systems, coal mine drainage, and steam and chemical deposits related to high pressure boilers. The ESWP regularly co-sponsored technical meetings through a variety of professional sections including Oil and Gas, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, and Steel Works.
Since 1913, the major social event of the Society has been the ESWP Annual Banquet, which features speakers of national prominence and is attended by industrial leaders in the engineering field. During the banquet, the William Metcalf Award is presented for outstanding engineering achievement. Metcalf served as the organization's first president.
