History
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters was formed in 1903 from the merger of two teamsters unions to form one large union affiliated with the American Federation of Labor. One of the largest and most powerful unions in the country, the Teamsters have been notoriously plagued by corrupt leadership throughout its history. In December 1957, the AFL-CIO ejected the Teamsters from the federation for non-compliance with newly enacted corruption rules. In 1964, Teamsters' president James Hoffa succeeded in unifying all freight drivers under a single collective bargaining contract, the National Master Freight Agreement, which gave the union the power to drive smaller companies out of the industry. During the late 1960s, acting General President Frank Fitzsimmons decentralized much of the power Hoffa fought to secure within the union and locals began to unwillingly force the international union into actions, such as raiding the United Farm Workers in California. Deregulation of the freight industry led to the closure of many unionized companies and a drastic decrease in Teamsters union membership. In 1985, the Teamsters were readmitted into the AFL-CIO only to leave in 2005 as a founding member of the Change to Win Federation.
