Description
John Woodruff from Connellsville, Pennsylvania, won a Gold Medal in the 1936 Olympics held in Berlin, Germany. Jesse Owens and Woodruff became famous in the racially charged atmosphere of the games due to the presence of Adolph Hitler. Woodruff won his Gold Medal in the 800 meters in dramatic fashion. He found himself boxed in by two other runners and unable to pass them. Woodruff came to a complete stop to purposefully fall back to last place where he could move to the outside and pass the other runners. Woodruff would go onto be a part of a world record setting 2-mile relay team. Woodruff currently is the last surviving member of the 1936 Olympic Team.
