Emsworth, Pennsylvania, residents comprise a variety of Christian denominations including Methodist, Lutheran, Catholic, and Presbyterian. The Emsworth United Presbyterian Church and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church were both established just prior to the borough’s incorporation into Allegheny County in 1871 and 1892 respectively. The Saint James Lutheran Church was built in 1907. The Borough of Emsworth was incorporated into Allegheny County in 1896 after a long legal struggle and subsequently grew into a vibrant residential community with a trolley service provided by the Pittsburgh Railway Company, and a “modern” lock and dam system constructed by the United States Army Corp of Engineers in 1919.
