Description
Two students wear medieval-style, conical hats. The 1935 May Day festival, "Two Queens," was the first held at Pennsylvania College for Women since 1929. Kay Ryall described the planned event in an April 28, 1935 article in The Pittsburgh Press: "The pageant, written by Marjorie Hopkins and Dorothy Berger Edsall, graduates of the college, is laid in the village of Sevenoaks, England, during May, 1572. Queen Elizabeth will ride in the scene of the May Day festivities attended by her court and yeomen of the guard; Robin Hood and his men will make merry, while heralds, trumpeters, pages, runners, jesters, Elizabethan jigs, and dragons will take their part according to the traditions of sixteenth century England. Morris dancers, country dancers, sword dancers, gypsy dancers, chimney sweeps and milkmaids will entertain the two Queens, Eugenie Miller, as Elizabeth, and Margaret Eichley, as May Queen, as well as the several thousand spectators who are expected on the campus. The campus forms a natural amphitheater for the production while the wooded and seclusion of Woodlawn Rd. creates an atmosphere in keeping with that of Sevenoaks. The musical setting for the festivities will be presented by the Carnegie Tech Symphony Orchestra. The P.C.W Verse Speaking Choir will sing the choral parts accompanying the pageant. An amplifying system is being installed on the campus so that everyone will be able to hear. Miss Vanda E. Kerst is in charge of the pageant. Every girl at the college as well as a number of children of the alumnae members will take part."
