Description
May Queen Martha Ackleson (top row, second from right as Persephone) graces the stage with three of her five attendants (Clare Fassinger, Clara Boyd, Dorothy Russell, Margaret Horrocks, and Helen Matz) and child participants. By the mid-1920s, Pennsylvania College for Women held a May Day pageant every other year. The 1927 pageant had an ancient Greek theme and was titled, “Persephone, A Greek Festival.” The first three parts told the story of Persephone, the goddess of spring. Part IV depicted other Greek myths, including the story of Atalanta, Hippomenes, and the golden apples. The play was written by Marjorie Stevenson '29 and once again directed by Vanda Kerst.
