Description
May Queen Agnes L. Dorman poses with other May Day participants, including members of the children's escort. The 1913 program, "Nature's Cycle," was written by Mary R. Jeffrey, a student in the class of 1915, and included dances and songs representing the four seasons. There was a ballet "Dance of the Poppies" for summer, a polka "Dance of the Chrysanthemums and Autumn Leaves" for fall, a Spanish "Dance of the Frost Sprites and Winter Sprites" for winter, and an unspecified "Dance of Violets, Daisies and Butterflies" for spring. The crowing of the May Queen and the maypole dances were then followed by a "Dance of the Roses" and a final "Dance of the Seasons," where "all the seasons unite in homage to the spring as the highest expression of the seasons." According to a May 24 article in The Pittsburg Bulletin, "several thousand persons gathered on the hillsides to see the fete."
