Description
Dr. Paul Anderson was President of the Pennsylvania College for Women from 1945 to 1960. After receiving a PhD in Philosophy from Columbia University in 1933, Anderson taught at the American University in Beirut. This experience shaped his view of the educational process and led him to create and implement the "General Education Program" at PCW during his Presidency. This program in liberal arts studies was praised by contemporary educators and led to his service on many Federal education committees. At PCW, he also increased the size of the campus by 50% and persuaded the alumni and trustees to approve a name change for the College. In 1955, the Pennsylvania College for Women became Chatham College, named after the William Pitt the Elder who was the first Earl of Chatham. Anderson died in 1993.
