Description
From October 27-29, 1980, Catherine May Dean Bedell met with Chatham students as part of a fellows program that brought former members of Congress to college campuses. Bedell, a Republican, served as a representative for six terms, from 1959-1971, and was the first woman elected to Congress from Washington State. Before coming to Washington D.C., Bedell worked as a high school English teacher and as a radio commentator, editor, and writer. She also served in the Washington State House of Representatives from 1952-1958. In Congress, Bedell served on the House Agriculture Committee and the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy. At the time of her Chatham visit, Bedell was the chairwoman of the U.S. International Trade Commission. Speaking in classes and individually with students, she offered advice and her opinions on the issues of the day. She spoke at length on the Equal Rights Amendment and the importance of a liberal arts education. Bedell died in 2004 at the age of 90.
