Description
Vivien Richman, a professor of education, holds a sign reading "A woman's place is in The House (and in the Senate)" while wearing a McGovern t-shirt. Richman taught at Chatham for 20 years, focusing her teaching on contemporary problems in urban education and the education of women. She added classes in special education to the Education Department curriculum and was also involved in Chatham's Gateway program for older students. Outside the classroom, Richman was active in the Women's Strike for Peace, the Committee for Sane Nuclear Policy, and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. When she died in 1990, her daughters established the Vivien C. Richman Scholarship Fund for a Gateway student in the Education Department. In their letter to the College, Richman's daughters said that "what she loved most in life was to take the extra time to give people her encouragement, to share her beautiful outlook on life, and provide opportunities which allow [students] to make the most of their talents."
