Description
Beatty Hall was the home of William Rea and his wife Mary Childs. William Rea, President of The People's Savings Bank, was a trustee of the College from 1902 until his death in 1929, serving as secretary and treasurer. The house was acquired by the College in 1948 and named after the College's founder, Dr. William Trimble Beatty (1834-1882). Dr. Beatty believed that religion and education were closely related and presented his idea for a women's college to the members of the First Presbyterian Church of Shadyside. His suggestion lead to action by members of the congregation and the founding of the Pennsylvania Female College in 1869. Beatty Hall was remodeled and used by the College as a dormitory for almost 40 students.
