Description
The Pitt Panthers mascot appears with his “handler” at a 1922 game. The panther was officially adopted as the University of Pittsburgh mascot on November 16, 1909 by students and alumni based on a suggestion by soon to be graduate George M. P. Baird. It was chosen because it once lived in the region, it had a long tradition of being considered noble, "Panther" alliterated well with Pitt, its gold matched a University color and no one else then used the panther as a mascot.
