Description
Rochester, Pennsylvania, was known as a railroad town because of the volume of trains that ran through this Pittsburgh suburb on a daily basis. Rochester’s first rail line infiltrated the town in 1851 when approximately 500 workmen laid the first tracks. By 1904, 122 passenger trains and approximately 140 freight trains traveled through the town every day on a four-track system run by the Pennsylvania Railroad (P.R.R.). The trains carried hundreds of commuters to and from the City of Pittsburgh and throughout the United States. In the late twentieth century, the Rochester Railroad Station and the Freight Station were razed, ending the era of passenger train travel through the town.
