SCI (State Correctional Institute) Pittsburgh, formerly known as Western Penitentiary, is Pennsylvania’s oldest operating correctional institution. Opened in 1882, the facility is located on 21 acres of land with approximately 12 acres located inside the walled perimeter. The facility, located on the banks of the Ohio River approximately five miles from downtown Pittsburgh, was designed by architects Theodore Eicholz and Harry Viehman. A legislative act of 1826 stipulated that prisoners sentenced from Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Bedford, Butler, Cambria, Clearfield, Crawford, Erie, Fayette, Greene, Huntingdon, Indiana, Jefferson, Juniata, McKean, Mercer, Mifflin, Potter, Somerset, Venango, Warren, Washington, and Westmoreland counties were to be incarcerated at this facility.
