Description
“The House Where We Began” was built in 1854 on Main Street in Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania, by the founder of the H. J. Heinz Company, John Henry Heinz. In 1904 Heinz floated “The House Where We Began” five miles down the Allegheny River to a spot within the grounds of the H.J. Heinz Company’s Allegheny City (currently Pittsburgh’s North Side neighborhood) plant. In 1954 the house was dismantled and rebuilt in Greenfield Village, Michigan. The photograph shows workmen preparing woodwork removed from the house for shipment.
