Description
A view of the H.J. Heinz Company’s grass courtyard (lower left) at the main plant in Pittsburgh’s North Side neighborhood. A 100,000-gallon water tank used for fire protection was located directly below the courtyard. In the left center background is the Baked Bean Building, which was built in 1897. At the Baked Bean Building plump, clean, and carefully selected beans were baked in large ovens and carried through conveyors to the canning room. Each sterilized can received its little piece of white pork, and then, passing along the conveyors, was mechanically filled with firm, whole, freshly baked beans. The tin can then received a measured quota of red spicy tomato sauce. By the early twentieth century, the main plant had grown to a group of buildings covering ten city blocks and comprising 50 acres of floor space.
