Description
H.J. Heinz (1844-1919) with his grandchildren in front of the conservatory at Greenlawn. From left to right are, H.J. Heinz II (future chairman of the board of the company), John Jr., and Sarah Given. On April 6, 1892, Greenlawn, located on Penn Avenue in the Homewood section of Pittsburgh, became the new home for the Heinz family. Greenlawn was a four-story structure built in the French Renaissance style. The building had about thirty rooms with each of the “sleeping rooms” connected to a bathroom. The site covered a full block (171 feet by 500 feet) on Penn Avenue between Lang and Murtland Avenues. George Westinghouse was their neighbor to the north; Armstrong and Woodwell were across from them on the south side of Penn Avenue.
