Description
In 1901, five years before the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act, which regulated and legitimized the commercial food industry, chemists at the H.J. Heinz Company developed a scientific approach to quality testing and measurement in food processing. The H.J. Heinz Company pioneered quality assurance and procedures. Heinz was always very committed to producing high quality products, and they often performed scientific experiments to try to improve the quality of those products. The chemists also attempted to understand the reasons why food spoiled and attempted to figure out ways to prevent it. This was especially important after the discovery of bacteria and its potentially harmful effects in 1898.
