Description
By the 1880’s Hicksville’s population had reached 850 people. Most farmed, especially tomatoes and cucumbers that were shipped to the H.J. Heinz Pickle Factory in the village. Thanks in part to the significant German population, several pickle works were built in Hicksville in the 1890’s. One, owned by H.J. Heinz Company, also produced ketchup, vinegar and sauerkraut. The pickle plants died when blight hit the cucumbers before World War I and Hicksville farmers turned instead to potatoes. Pictured is the Heinz Salting Station 5, which pickled cucumbers.
