Description
Two Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation Car Ferries, one loaded (right), and the other empty (left), at the Pittsburgh Terminal. Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation was the first steel manufacturer to use car ferries to transport loaded freight cars between its Pittsburgh and Aliquippa Works. The barges, which were 200 feet long, 25 feet wide and 9 feet deep, could accommodate eight freight cars each and were built in the Jones & Laughlin boat yards along the Monongahela River in the South Side neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
