Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “First waterways shipment of steel products from Pgh into the Northwest leaving the Aliquippa works of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation in October, 1928. Arrival of this shipment in Minneapolis was made the occasion for a civic demonstration, participated in by city officials, business associations and the public. Experiment of delivering several hundreds of tons of steel products to a customer in Minneapolis, the Hall Hardware Company, was made by J&L to demonstrate that the inland waterways are available into the Northwest as well as into the Southwest. The movement was handled in a J&L tow to Cairo, and then north on the upper Mississippi by the Inland Waterways Service.”
