Description
Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation of Pittsburgh was a leading manufacturer of steel barges. B. F. Jones, Jr., president of the company, was quoted in 1927, “Fully thirty-five years ago (1892) we led the way in making use of the canalized Monongahela River for transport of coal from our mines to our mills, establishing a complete transportation facility for that purpose, consisting of a number of steam towboats and a fleet of steel barges. . . .we are. . .the pioneers and today are sending out regularly every month large shipments of all our products loaded into steel barges of our own design and manufacture and transported by our own boats to lower river ports where they are transferred into railroad cars for local delivery or for movement into distant points in the interior of the Southwest and West.”
