Description
James Laughlin was born in County Down, Ireland, in 1806 and following the death of his mother, had immigrated to the United States in 1829 with his father and sisters to join his brother in Pittsburgh. He and his brother were successful in the provisioning trade but later branched out into banking. In 1852 he became the president of the Fifth Avenue Savings Bank, which he had helped found. When this bank in 1863 became the first national bank established in Allegheny County under the terms of the new Banking Act of the United States, James Laughlin was still its president. In addition, he took a strong interest in the iron business about this time, loaned Jones, Lauth & Company money, and became a partner in the limited partnership known as Jones & Lauth. In 1861 this firm expired and James Laughlin, along with his two sons, and B. F. Jones with his two brothers, formed Jones & Laughlin, which subsequently became Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation. In addition to his banking and iron-making occupations, James Laughlin was President of the Board of Trustees of Western Theological Seminary, was an incorporator of the Western Pennsylvania Institute for the Deaf and Dumb, and founded and served as first president of the Pennsylvania Female College. He died in 1882.
