Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “BENJAMIN FRANKLIN JONES SR. Born August 8, 1824 Died May 19, 1903 At death was: Member of advisory board, Jones & Laughlin, Limited. Director and member of executive committee, Jones and Laughlin Steel Company. Jones & Laughlins, Limited B.F. Jones was elected one of Managers (Board of Five) September 20, 1883. Resigned from this board June 4, 1900, and elected one of managers (Board of Nine) same day. Elected member of advisory board June 4, 1900.” B.F. Jones, born in Claysville, Pennsylvania, began his business career with Samuel M. Kier’s canal boat companies at the age of 18. With Kier’s financial help, he became a partner in Jones, Lauth & Company in 1853, eventually becoming owner of the American Iron Works in Brownstown (now the South Side neighborhood of Pittsburgh) in 1861 with another partner, James Laughlin. In that same year, the partnership became Jones & Laughlin. B.F. Jones died in 1903, a year after the partnership became a corporation, Jones & Laughlin Steel Company.
