Description
Caption on the front of the photograph reads, “Early stage of J & L Steel business.” Cupolas, a cylindrical shaft type of blast furnace, were used in melting purchased pig iron in large quantities. The Bessemer converters of Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation used the cupola method of reheating the pig iron, which resulted in a higher sulphur content from the coke used in reheating. Jones & Laughlin continued to run what was thought at the time to be the largest cupola plant ever built, until all cupola operations were closed down in 1920.
