Description
The explosion occurred on June 16, 1890, killing the thirty-one miners in the mine. A caption on the back of photograph reads, “Hill Farm Mine Explosion 1890 Dunbar, Pa. [Far right of photo]: Upper left shows Dunbar blast furnace one mile distant. To right, in back of building is graveyard where “Hays” is buried this day. [Center of photo]: Showing mine entrance on fire, two mine inspectors at left, bending over. See the tracks on the right from bank above mouth of level Man below fence – near building is Mr. Bigley who has two brothers in the fire. [Far left of photo]: Farm to left of mine entrance.”
