Description
This aerial view of Mellon Square (pictured in the center) highlights its unique juxtaposition among the buildings of downtown Pittsburgh. To the immediate right of the Square is the Mellon Bank Buildings (1923-24) built by architects Trowbridge & Livingston with E. P. Mellon. Parallel (left center) to the Square is the William Penn Hotel (1914-16 & 1928) on William Penn Way. To the left of Mellon Square (left foreground) is the groundbreaking Alcoa building (1953) built by architects Harrison & Abramovitz and located on 6th Avenue. A portion of the Harvard-Yale-Princeton Club (1890) can be seen directly behind the Alcoa building and the Smithfield United Church spire can be seen at the bottom of the image.
