Description
The Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation (foreground) was one of the largest iron and steel manufacturers in the United States during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By 1894 Jones & Laughlin was completely out of the iron business and produced only steel. By the mid-twentieth century, Jones & Laughlin was one of the largest steel producing companies in the world. It played a vital role in the defense industry during World War II. By the 1980s, as the steel industry moved away from Pittsburgh, Jones & Laughlin's vast plants along both sides of the Monongahela River near downtown Pittsburgh had been closed. Pictured in the distant background is the University of Pittsburgh campus featuring the Cathedral of Learning, the tallest gothic style building in the world.
