Description
Oakland derived its name from the abundance of oak trees found on the farm of William Eichenbaum, who settled there in 1840. The township was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh in 1868. Oakland developed rapidly following the Great Fire of 1845 in downtown Pittsburgh, with people moving out to what was then suburban area. By 1860 passenger rail service encouraged residential growth as far as Bates and North Bellefield Streets, and commercial development along Fifth Avenue. Oakland features the 42-story Cathedral of Learning (background), located on the University of Pittsburgh’s campus. It is the tallest gothic styled building and second-tallest education building in the world. The University of Pittsburgh began as the Pittsburgh Academy in 1787. Chartered as the Western University of Pennsylvania in 1819, it became the University of Pittsburgh in 1908, when the university moved its campus to Oakland. In 2004 it had student population of 32,000 on its 132 acre main campus and four regional campuses. Also pictured in the photograph is Pitt Stadium, a classic bowl stadium covering about nine acres and 791 feet long by 617 feet wide. A total of 2200 tons of structural steel as well as 1000 tons of reinforced steel and 20,000 cubic yards of concrete were used during the construction of the stadium. Construction began on August 7, 1924, and was completed on September 1, 1925. In December 1999, Pitt Stadium was razed to make way for the Peterson Events Center.
