Description
The Consolidation Coal Company emerged from a merger of small coal operators in the Georges Creek region of Maryland in 1860. The company, which specialized in bituminous coal production, was formerly incorporated in 1864. By 1927 the company was the largest bituminous coal producer in the United States. The company merged with the Pittsburgh Coal Company to form the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Company in 1945. The organization had two main offices in downtown Pittsburgh, one in the Koppers Building, and the other at the Oliver Building. The Continental Oil Company (Conoco) bought the Consolidation Coal Company in 1966 and in turn was acquired by the DuPont Company in 1981. By 1991 Consolidation Coal became CONSOL Energy Inc. In 2004 the company was still the largest producer of bituminous coal in the United States.
