Description
Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “View of Pennsylvania Railroad Passenger Terminal showing new glass top platform shelters, part of a 27-million dollar modernization program. Scene at left is along Liberty Avenue where part of the new 5-million dollar Pitt Penn Terminal warehouse, which replaced facilities formerly located at the Point, can be seen.” This modernization program undertaken by the Pennsylvania Railroad included modernized sheds with wider platforms, a new terminal building, an exit to Thirteenth Street, escalators to the tracks, and a new bridge over Liberty Avenue. In the background the Penn Incline is visible. The Penn Incline, also called the 17th Street Incline, began operating in 1883 and handled 20-ton coal freight cars. It ceased operation in 1953. Bigelow Boulevard is visible in the right background.
