Description
The intersection of Fifth Avenue and West Diamond Street in downtown Pittsburgh. Notice the trolley car tracks on the street. Pittsburgh built the third largest trolley car fleet, at 666 cars, in North America during the mid-1940s until the early 1950s. At its peak, the Pittsburgh Railways Company operated a streetcar and network of tracks comprising more than 600 miles. In the summer of 1953 trolley car service was scaled back to the border of Allegheny County. In 1968 the Port Authority was operating just 58 miles of track. On September 4, 1999, the last regular trolley car service made its final run. The three remaining functional trolley cars, all having logged well over two million miles, were donated to trolley museums.
