Description
Three Rivers Stadium, home to the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers from 1970 to 2000. The stadium, which took more than 2 years to build at a cost of $55 million, seated 47,971 fans for baseball games, and 59,000 for football games. The location, the former site of Exposition Park in Pittsburgh’s North Side neighborhood, was chosen in 1958, but 10 years of labor and political disputes delayed the start of construction until April 25, 1968. The Pirates opened their tenure at Three Rivers on July 16, 1970, with a 3-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds, and lost the final game at the stadium on October 1, 2000, to the Chicago Cubs, 10-9. Three Rivers was imploded on February 11, 2001, having been replaced by new stadiums Heinz Field and PNC Park.
