Description
With the completion of the canals on the Ohio River in 1929, new barge lines sprang up and began to move cargo between Pittsburgh and other inland cities. That same year, Dravo Corporation bought an interest in the Union Barge Lines consisting of four sternwheel towboats and 27 barges. By the late 1950s Union Barge Lines owned and operated ten diesel towboats, such as the one seen in the photograph, and more than 300 barges. Tonnage on the Pittsburgh rivers totaled almost 55 million tons during the mid 1950s.
