Description
Downtown Pittsburgh at 9:20AM in the fall of 1945 before smoke control. Smoke combined with smog often produced such “night” scenes. In 1949 the City of Pittsburgh was joined by the Allegheny County Board of County Commissioners to fight for smoke control and to adopt a County Smoke Control Ordinance. In 1945 there were 1,293 manufacturing facilities in Pittsburgh, which produced the smog and pollution that the city was notorious for until 1950.
