  • Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “Bound for Idaho Power Company’s Brownlee Project at Robinette, Ore., this 50-ton section of a waterwheel generator stator is shown being loaded aboard a flatcar at the Westinghouse East Pittsburgh plant. This stator section, when coupled with two identical units in a circular arrangement, will form the complete stator for the generator. A rotating unit called a rotor will be positioned inside this stator housing. The rotor will be connected to a water-driven turbine by a vertical shaft. Water rushing at high velocity through raceways in the dam will spin the turbine. The turbine will, in turn, drive the rotor. The rotor induces an electrical field in the stator, thus generating electricity. The Idaho Power Company, which has received Federal Power Commission authorization to build three dams in the Hells Canyon section of the Snake River between Idaho and Oregon, has ordered eight waterwheel generators form Westinghouse, four of which will be installed at the Brownlee Station and four at the Ox Bow Station. Each of the Brownlee units are rated at 90,100 kilowatts, and the Ox Bow generators will have a capacity of 47,500-kilowatts each. When completed, the combined generating capacity of these stations will exceed half a million kilowatts, enough potential power to serve a city of more than one million people.”
