Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “Shown here at right, the Westinghouse Electric Corporation Tele-Computer Center presents a dramatic picture of modern architecture and sets the theme for the unique operations performed inside. The Center is the hub of the world’s first computer-controlled industrial teletype system which performs dozens of management tasks, ranging from order processing to producing payroll checks. Located one mile east of Pittsburgh, the 40,000-square-foot Center actually is a building within a building. The 5,000-square-foot computer and tabulating area makes up a central core which is sealed off from roof to floor form the outer areas of the structure. Erected at a cost in excess of $1,000,000, the building is totally electrically heated in winter and cooled in summer by seven Westinghouse heat pumps.”
